NCAA Picks: College Football and College Basketball
Two very different college sports, one approach: price every game from opponent-adjusted data, release each pick with its line, and grade it publicly.
Two sports, two full pages
College football and college basketball share a governing body and not much else. Football is a once-a-week sport with huge talent gaps, garbage-time distortion and roster turnover from the transfer portal. Basketball is a nightly sport with hundreds of teams, big swings in tempo and some of the strongest home-court advantages in sports. They need different models, so they each have their own page.
College football picks: how the model handles opponent-adjusted efficiency, tempo, garbage time, the transfer portal, big spreads, bowl opt-outs and the College Football Playoff.
College basketball picks: how the model uses tempo-free efficiency, the four factors, venue-specific home court, three-point variance, conference tournaments and March Madness.
What both college models have in common
Every opponent counts. College schedules are uneven, so every rating is adjusted for the strength of the teams faced.
The market can't watch everything. With so many teams and games, lower-profile matchups get less betting attention. The model prices them the same way it prices a primetime game.
Early-season caution. Ratings in September and November lean on prior seasons and roster changes, so fewer picks clear the bar until current-season data matures.
Public grading. Every college pick is released with its line before the game starts and graded when it goes final. Losses stay on the record.

How college grading works
Every college pick is graded the same way as every other pick on Sportspickhero:
- Full-game spreads, totals and moneylines grade on the final score, including overtime.
- First-half picks grade at halftime.
- A result that lands exactly on the number is a push.
- Every pick is graded against the line it was released at, and losses stay on the record.

Why college sports suit a model
The biggest challenge in college sports is scale. There are too many teams and too many games for any person to follow closely, and the betting market concentrates its attention on the biggest names. A model doesn't get tired, doesn't follow the TV schedule and doesn't care which team is ranked. It rates a mid-major conference game with the same inputs it uses for a top-five matchup. That consistency is the point.
It also helps with the noise. College teams change a lot from year to year, and early-season results can be misleading. The model shrinks early results toward prior ratings and only gives full weight to current-season data once there's enough of it.
How many college picks
Pro members get about five picks a day across all the sports we cover. College picks are part of that card when the model likes a price: Saturdays in the fall, and most nights from January through March.
